The research group led by Professor Antje Körner, “Childhood Obesity & Metabolic Research,” investigates experimental, clinical, and genetic aspects of childhood obesity and endocrinology, bridging basic science and clinically applied medicine with an interdisciplinary team. A particular focus is the study of obesity-related complications in children. 

The Leipzig University as partner institution of the German Center for Child and Youth Health (DZKJ) at the Leipzig Medical Faculty (speaker Prof. Antje Körner) closely interlinked with LIFE Child and Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG), Helmholtz Munich is looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated PhD candidate, who is eager to dive into translational research in healthy childhood development.

Die Aufgaben

Dissecting genetic predisposition of early origin of common disease (e.g. obesity) in childhood

• Perform quantitative analyses of clinical and multi-omics data to investigate risk factor and mechanisms underlying obesity and related traits.
• Characterize clinical, molecular and environmental factors contributing to obesity risk, progression and subtypes.
• Apply bioinformatic and statistical tools for integrative analyses and to assess genetic susceptibility
• Collaborate with local, national and international partners (DZKJ) and contribute to joint data analyses and publications

Ihr Profil

• Successfully completed Master’s degree in life sciences (biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, genetics, computational sciences molecular medicine, nutritional science, etc.)
• Strong motivation to work with quantitative methods and computational tools
• Understanding of (epi) genetic background and biology of common disease (e.g. obesity)
• Exceptional teamwork, ability to communicate in an interdisciplinary team
• Interest in multi-omics/high dimensional data and molecular epidemiology (genetic, epigenetic, proteomic or transcriptomic data). Ideally, experience in data analysis using R and/or Python. 
• Solid background in statistics, basic knowledge of epidemiology and willingness to learn new methods
• Very good communications skills in spoken and written English; German is of advantage
