PhD Researcher (f/m/x): Origin of Common Diseases in Childhood – Genetic/Epigenetic Predisposition (9212)
Kinderklinik, pädiatrisches Forschungszentrum, LIFE Child

in Teilzeit 26 Std./Woche, befristet auf 2 Jahre (Projektbefristung bis 31.05.2026, mit der Möglichkeit der Verlängerung)

The Leipzig University as partner and institution of the future German Center for Child and Youth Health (DZKJ) at the Leipzig Medical Faculty (speaker Prof. Antje Körner) closely interlinked with LIFE Child is looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated PhD candidate, who is eager to dive into translational research in healthy childhood development.

As partner site of the DZKJ we will jointly address new health risks emerging from the interplay between predisposition and our changing environment, identify risk and resilience factors and unravel underlying mechanisms for the development of common disease with origin in childhood. To investigate the early determinants on child development and health, unique cohorts are available, particularly the LIFE Child cohort.

Our team is closely integrated with the research structures of the Medical Faculty of the Leipzig University, Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG), Helmholtz Munich, and leading local as well as national research consortia, such as the Collaborative Research Consortium SFB „ObesityMechanisms“, the future German Center for Child and Youth Health (DZKJ), and our large children’s and adolescent’s cohort LIFE Child.

Our offer

  • Due to the application procedure specified by the BMBF, the position is initially limited for 2 years; an extension is intended
  • Collaboration in local, national, and international research networks
  • Professional development and continuing scientific training opportunities
  • Opportunity to build specialist knowledge whilst developing key professional experience
  • The Leipzig University promote equal opportunity for gender equality, diversity, inclusion. Where applicants are equally qualified, preference is given to candidates with disabilities or equivalent.

Die Aufgaben

The aim of the project is to investigate the genetic and molecular background for child development and common diseases in childhood in various cohorts, focusing on gene-environment interaction. Specifically, the genetic predisposition (polygenic risk score, risk profiling) for different phenotypes during the course of common diseases in children and adolescents (including obesity, allergies, mental health) will be analyzed. In addition, epigenetic studies will be conducted. Your task will involve conducting trajectory analyses and longitudinal latent structural analyses.

Ihr Profil

We are looking forward to applications of young scientists who appreciate the attractive environment of a young research group and who are enthusiastic about science.

  • Master’s degree in life sciences (biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, genetics, molecular medicine, nutritional science, physiology, etc.)
  • Interest in working with large scale data and genomics, ideally initial experience in modelling longitudinal data
  • You shall pursue an independent research project
  • Good analytical skills, basic understanding of epidemiology, and an affinity for data analysis.
  • Exceptional teamwork, communication, and collaboration skills
